New Mexico DOJ camps

There were many Issei who were rounded up and imprisoned at the Department of Justice's detainment prisons in New Mexico following the bombing of Pearl Harbor.
Some were able to be released "on parole" to re-join their families either at Poston, Arizona or to other internment camps.
The New Mexico Japanese American Citizen's League was awarded a $54,000 grant from the National Park Service this past summer for a project on WWII Japanese American Confinement Sites in New Mexico. The camps in New Mexico were located in Santa Fe, Fort Stanton, Old Raton Ranch (Baca Ranch), and Lordsburg.
The goal of the New Mexico Japanese American Internment Sites History, Interpretation, and Education Project is to reach a wide and diverse audience of New Mexicans to educate them about history of internment in the state, and to inspire thought and conversation about issues of citizenship, identity, and civil liberty.
The project is currently in the planning phase, during which we are developing the content and design for a traveling exhibit, historic markers, website, and outreach brochure.
They are interested in information, photographs, and personal stories about life in the New Mexico camps and about the interactions between the camps and surrounding communities. They are interested in how various New Mexican communities reacted to the notion of internment, and how Japanese American community members were treated by the rest of their community.

 1.    They are seeking information, artifacts, photographs, written documents, “stories from the internees,”  etc., related to any of the camps in New Mexico.
2.    They are seeking anyone from New Mexico who was in the 100th Battalion, or 442nd Regimental Combat Team.  They would like to obtain an interview of the veterans and/or their family who lived in New Mexico during or after WWII.
A list of names would also be a great start for our project.

There is a strict timeline to complete the Planning Phase of the grant project, so any assistance you may be able to provide would be greatly appreciated.
